Little Know Fact: A Nubian Queen Ruler

Queen Shanakdakhete took the Throne of and ruled the Kush Empire in ancient Nubia from 170 to 150 BC. She was the first African Queen of Nubia. The Queen ruled with complete authority in the Meroƫ Empire as well. As a result, the Queen became known as the Lord of the Two Lands. The Queen also exercised power without the support of a king, which was innovative for the particular time.

Another little known fact about Queen Shanakdakhete is she played a major role in the development of the Meteoric religion which derived from the Metoitic people who inhabited what is now known as Sudan. They also created their own language.

Queen Shanakdakhete is depicted in a statue now housed at the Cairo (Egypt) Museum. It was originally found in Meroƫ. The statue includes a prince who holds the crown of the Queen; this suggests that she may have had an heir. The mere act of holding the crown implies the position of power held by the Queen.

The Queen’s body is depicted as strong and sturdy bestowed with jewels, which represented affluence, command, elegance and beauty.
